Burgess own goal and Freeman strike give USA a 2-0 Group D win over Australia.
USA opened Group D with a 2-0 victory over Australia at Lumen Field, with the decisive opener arriving in the 11th minute when C. Burgess turned the ball into his own net. A. Freeman doubled the lead just before the break, converting in the 43rd minute to send USA into halftime with a comfortable cushion. Australia, set up in a defensive 5-4-1, generated little going forward and finished with just two shots on target from five attempts and an xG of 0.44. USA were more threatening throughout, recording ten shots with an xG of 1.3, though their own shot conversion was modest — two on target from ten.
The result puts USA top of Group D on three points after matchday one. Australia, who made three substitutions at the start of the second half in search of a response, were unable to create the chances needed to work back into the match. USA had 63 percent possession and seven corners to Australia's four, reflecting their control across the ninety minutes.
