D. Kamada struck in the 88th minute, assisted by K. Ogawa, to cancel out C. Summerville's 64th-minute goal and level the match at 2-2 in Group F at AT&T Stadium. Netherlands had taken the lead through V. van Dijk in the 51st minute, assisted by R. Gravenberch, only for K. Nakamura to equalize six minutes later with T. Kubo providing the assist. Summerville, who had been booked in the 61st minute, restored the Dutch advantage three minutes later from another Gravenberch assist. Japan's late pressure paid off when Kamada found the net with two minutes of regulation remaining to deny Netherlands the win.

The draw leaves both sides with one point apiece in Group F after the opening round of fixtures. Netherlands, who held 60 percent possession and registered six shots on target, will carry the knowledge that a two-goal lead in the second half was not held. Japan fashioned fewer chances — three shots on target from ten attempts against six from nine for the Dutch — but converted when it mattered most. Both sides return to group stage action with their qualification prospects still open.
